I was having dinner with a couple of friends a while ago and had this realization that I’m death dependent!
A bit of a shock? Profoundly so!
It happened as I put a piece of calamari, squid, into my mouth. It was one of those little complete mouth-sized squids. Its tiny tentacles caught my attention and reminded me I was about to gobble down a once living thing.
It wasn’t a particularly big deal and yet it really struck me – I would not be alive if it were not for death. Death feeds me! Death keeps me alive! Really. Everything I eat was once alive no matter whether I am vegan, vegetarian, or carnivore. Wheat, fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, cheese, peanut butter, junk food, all of it was once living. And those of you who are vegan are not death dependent exempt!
So what is all this about you may be asking?
Well, if my life is totally dependent on death for its survival how dare I fight death at all costs when it comes knocking for me. How dare I think of myself as more special than nature; that somehow I ‘should’ survive being someone else’s meal. It is downright hypocritical and totally selfish!
Time to learn how to embrace that which we depend on for our very survival – Death.
Time to re-embrace our humble place in nature.
Time to re-brand the Grim Reaper,
To invite death back to life.
