There is something both delightful and freeing about fully accepting the fact that we are simply humans being. Given our entrenched fear of death though, we avoid dropping all the way into our humanness in order to avoid the ‘pain’ of death. Instead we focus on ascension. But you can’t get out until you fully get in!
I know, I know, I can hear all the feedback as I am writing this piece, all the assertions that we are a spiritual being after all.
“Well I am really a spiritual being having a human experience.” “I am a soul in transition.”
“I am a spark of God.” “I am the light.”
Whether these claims are true or not isn’t the point. In fact if you think it is the point you are likely using your spirituality to avoid how very human we actually are!
We are incarnate.
in-car-nate; adjective
in human form, in the flesh, in physical form, in bodily form, made flesh
We are of flesh and bone! Our very humanity is unrelentingly persistent no matter how we shade it with spirituality. We are humans with all our human needs, desires, functions, senses, and activities. Our mammalian instincts to procreate, to claim territory, to band together in packs, to flee or fight. to forage and hunt are blended in this messy human condition along with our spiritual nature.
We are incarnate; accept it and you become instantly free to fully enjoy the human experience. Fight it with new aged spirituality and the almost panicked desire for accession and you will miss entirely the opportunity to evolve spiritually by descending fully into our humanity. The only way out is in!
What I mean by this is get into being a human, the sensations, the feelings, the good, the bad and the ugly all of it! Participate in your humbling human condition – there is no other way.
Notice that farts stink, and that the flowers smell so beautifully.
Notice that people can behave in upsetting ways and that they are also delightful.
Notice that your kitchen garbage stinks and that the meal you just prepared smells so good your mouth can’t help but water.
Notice that your life partner really did push your buttons and that they do really love you too.
Notice that your child made a huge mess and that they also do their very best to keep their room clean.
Notice your dark side all of it and at the same time honor your lightness of being.
Notice the homeless, really feel and see them and be grateful for your home.
Notice the profound and unrelenting humanness ALL of it – the deeply negative and the amazingly positive.
Notice the animal in you and right beside it the spirit in you.
Notice the rawness and the tenderness, the fight and the embrace.
Notice the death all around you and embrace your life with gratitude.
Notice everything begins, everything lives and everything died – the good, the bad and the ugly.
Be truly HUMAN and your spirit will be instantly SOAR.
