One tool that often gets left out when we consider spirituality and seniors is death. The stages of life often have us move from childhood to adulthood and all that life entails when it comes to being a householder. We get tied in knots making ends meet, raising kids and managing our careers. Then…
All of a sudden we’re old;
All of a sudden it seems time is short; and
All of a sudden it feels as if death is ever nearer.
These are all fundamental to ageing spiritually for elders. This ingredient, death being closer, can be used as a wonderful tool to delve more deeply into our spirituality as a senior.
Ageing reminds us of our mortality:
Ageing provides motivation to do our gratitude and amends work; and
Ageing gives us the opportunity to prepare for a conscious death.
The final piece preparing for a conscious death is worthy of our elders’ attention. We can learn how dying and death progress.
How the mind empties;
How the emotions release; and
How the body lets go.
In preparing this way we seniors will begin to recognize what is left, our spirit, and how to begin to connect more deeply to this essence. By meditating on dying we can prepare for the awakening opportunity death is.
